High Flying Graduates Cleared for Takeoff

A specialist aviation job placement service that will launch graduates into the competitive aviation job market was launched in Melbourne last night.

Aviation graduates from around Australia attended the 2nd annual Swinburne University of Technology Aviation Careers Expo which coincided with the launch of the Aviation Graduate Service (AGS).

The service has been applauded by universities in five States around Australia, including Swinburne University, University of New South Wales, Griffith University, Edith Cowan University and University of South Australia.

AGS has been developed exclusively for aviation graduates and is available throughout Australia. Leveraging from the expertise and reputation of AvLaw – a highly respected international aviation consultancy company – AGS represents the missing link between aviation graduates and their potential employers.

The service provides aviation graduates within Australia with the opportunity to view a range of aviation specific jobs from all areas of the industry including airlines, airports, government departments and aviation consultancies.

AGS plays a key role in connecting participating aviation employers to students with a keen interest and specialisation within their particular area of expertise. AGS caters specifically to the requisite needs of employers by only referring graduates who meet the knowledge and experience requirements specified for each vacancy.

Due to the progressive nature of the aviation industry, the demand for qualified graduates to fill the key roles within airlines, airports and other sectors of the industry is continuing to grow. For aviation graduates, searching and applying for jobs within the aviation industry can be a daunting task. The unique attributes of AGS sees the direct link established between students and recruiters within the industry.

Speaking at the launch of the service was the Managing Director of AvLaw and AGS founder Mr Ron Bartsch. Mr Bartsch stated “This is the first dedicated placement service specifically for aviation graduates”.

Mr Bartsch has been a senior lecturer in aviation at the University of New South Wales for almost two decades and was formerly a senior lecturer at TAFE and a high school mathematics and science teacher. Mr Bartsch justified the rationale for a service like AGS, stating that “with the degree of technical specialisations in the aviation industry, tertiary trained graduates are well placed to meet the industry’s increasingly complex demands.”

Regional Express Airlines, Australia’s largest independent regional airline, has registered as a participating aviation employer under the new service. Mr Garry Filmer, the airline’s Chief Operating Officer, said “AGS provides us with timely and direct access to qualified aviation graduates whilst eliminating the need to allocate costly resources on expensive and time consuming advertising”.

Mr Filmer said that the airline had already recruited many aviation graduates throughout Australia and across all areas of the airline’s operations. “However, with AGS the cost and time associated with recruiting new graduates is much less and overall more straightforward” Mr Filmer stated.

Aviation graduates and aviation employers can access the AGS service online through www.aviationgraduateservice.com

The international civil aviation organisation is holding an emergency meeting in Canada to discuss the risks of commercial planes flying over war zones.

Transcript

EMMA ALBERICI, PRESENTER: In the wake of the MH17 disaster the international civil aviation organisation will hold an emergency meeting in Canada overnight to discuss the risks of commercial planes flying over war zones.

It’s been reported that airlines will use the meeting to push for greater access to neutral information on whether to avoid certain air space.

Ron Bartsch, the former head of safety at Qantas, says a central body should provide independent advise to the airlines.

RON BARTSCH, AVLAW INTERNATIONAL: Airlines do and are required under international law to have their own approved safety management systems and that allows them to assess risks that are peculiar to their operation. But I think it would be a very good starting point if the international regulatory bodies and agencies were able to provide a sort of rating system that airlines could monitor and see emerging trends as and when they develop.

EMMA ALBERICI: Emirates has announced it will divert its non-Iraq-bound flights away from Iraqi air space because of the potential threat from ISIS militants.

Qantas says it still considers flying over Iraq safe because of the cruising altitude its planes maintain over the country.
