These are a thorn in the side of local Councils, who do not see the relevance of an airport, only the cost of the airport and it’s drain on the public purse.
Even the Federal Government does not understand how to manage these vital infra-structure assets. Bankstown is a good example where the only north-south runway got in the way of a non-aviation use. At Archerfield, the run-off area for the main strip is now infringed by a 2nd hand yard.
It is rare where a new airport can be welcomed in Australia, with appropriate support from the local Council and community. Toowoomba requires a new air port, with the current one being severely “hemmed-in” by development and a community concern with jets.
A bit further to commute, but a safer arrival likely and with the better road system around this major town, will encourage usage.
